Homeschool Mother's Journal :: This & That ~ 5/25/2012

Robin's Eggs in a tree by my parent's deck.
In our homeschool this week…Sarah finished up her Math U See book last week and is working on some areas she needs to review.  The boys are both working on finishing up their respective books.
Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share…I recently started using Awesome Note to keep track of my to-do list and my shopping list.  Keeping a to-do list on my phone has been very helpful.
I am inspired by…my kids
Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…our last week of co-op.  My kids are sorry that it's ending, they have very much enjoyed the last six weeks.
My favorite thing this week was…our pool opened this week, that makes my kids very happy!
Things I’m working on…Summer plans for learning and for fun.  I need to work out some sort of schedule for tv/computer time.
I’m reading…I finished Veganist and have been reading a couple of vegan cookbooks The Gluten Free Vegan, and Let Them Eat Vegan.  Also reading Attachement Focused Parenting.
I’m cooking…some new recipes, tonight we tried  vegan macaroni and cheese.  Everyone liked it except for my oldest, but I'm not quite sure he gave it a fair try!

Also we have been making a yummy, simple, squash soup.  Bake the butternut squash as normal, dig out the squash and place into blender.  Add a cup or so of coconut, almond or whatever type of milk you drink.  I push the soup button on our Blendtec and in less than a minute it is ready to go.  Add salt and pepper to taste.  Delicious.
A photo, video, link, or quote to share…The kids and I have been enjoying the book about Abraham Lincoln we are reading.  I thought this quote was very appropriate:
"Lincoln always felt handicapped by what he called 'his lack of education.'  In this he made the common mistake of thinking that going to school was 'education.'  In all, he had less than twelve months in schools in Kentucky and Indiana; but in those schools he acquired the basic tools for learning - reading, writing, and simple arithmetic.  Afterward he used those tools to learn whatever he needed to know for the work he chose to do.  His speeches, writings, and lifework prove that he was well educated, and that anyone who is willing to work and can borrow books can educate himself."
Hope you have a great holiday weekend!

Wow! Wonder if you'll get to see those Robins hatch? That would be interesting!

When I checked the other day, only one egg was left. We will probably miss it!

We are also in summer mode at our home. The TV/computer schedule sounds like a great idea. I haven't needed it yet but the pool just opened so they are swimming a lot. Once the newness of swimming wears off, we will NEED that schedule. Thanks for sharing.

I would love for you and your family to join us in "30 Days of Praying for Our Nation." I am using the prayer guide for history/Bible in the fall to teach the kids the importance of praying for our nation and its leaders. http://prayingforournation2012.blogspot.com/

That soup sounds delicious! It sounds like you are almost ready for summer with the co-op wrapping up, plans made, and some schoolwork completed.

What a pretty picture of the robin's eggs! Robin's egg blue is one of my favorite shades of blue. =)
Wonderful quote about Abe Lincoln. And true. :) Anyone who is willing to work and can borrow a book can get an education. (Likewise regardless of where a child is getting his education, if he doesn't put in the work to BE educated, he won't learn much.) I like this quote because it reminds me to not only teach my children, but to teach them to learn and work hard. Have a great weekend!

Our pool opened this weekend too! It's our favorite thing to do with our hot Texas summers. Love the quote! We are going to the Lincoln Museum in Illinois as part of our summer vacation :)

Our Vitamix has a yummy and warm butternut squash soup that I made once. The kids were still so hungry afterward! I decided it would be a great starter for a holiday meal though :) Glad your pool opened up! We went to our lake today for the first time this year. Felt good to be back at the old family fun routine :)

Aren't robins' eggs the most amazing color? I knew what robins egg blue was, but hadn't ever seen real ones until a couple of year ago and was blown away by how beautiful they are.

I love your quote on Lincoln. reminds me of my dad who only went to school to tenth grade but was a voracious reader and taught himself many skills in his lifetime! Love your picture of the robins eggs! stopping by from the HMJ link up. ~~Katie

I love the photo of the Robin's eggs. So beautiful. I am interested in your vegan mac and cheese...as I have a couple of kids who can't eat cheese.
