Ways to Bring History Alive in Your Homeschool

I love exploring history along side my children. History is so much more than memorizing dates from a text book. History is amazing people who founded our country, brave people who were filled with character traits that we want to our children to emulate. Homeschooling history gives us an amazing opportunity to dig deep and explore those time periods and events that truly resonate with our family.

My favorite ways to bring History alive in our Homeschool

Field Trips – Visiting museums, living history museums, and other historical sites can really transport our children and help them to visualize what life was like in a different time period.

Food  – Food is such a fun way to bring history alive. You can cook a meal similar to what the pioneers would have eaten. Visit a living history museum to churn your own butter and try pressed sugar cane.

Movies – Movies and documentaries are an entertaining way to learn more about history. While movies aren’t always entirely accurate, take Disney’s Pocohontas for example, they can still reinforce the overall themes and ideas of the time period.

 Crafts – We are not big on crafts in our house. Not at all. So if you are like me and crafts aren’t big in your home, no worries stick with the other three choices and you will be good to go! If you love doing crafts then you are only limited by your imagination and Pinterest!

Ask – Talk to the older generation. While they will obviously be more knowledgeable about modern history, it’s still nice to get a first person perspective on certain events. Where they were or what they were doing when John F. Kennedy was shot, even the events of 9/11.

 Travel –  If you are looking for even more than just a field trip, consider doing some educational travel. Just about any vacation can be educational!
