We have been using the family closet system since mid-September. I love it! Here are the benefits for my family of eight:
- clothes are in a centralized location – makes putting clothes away very easy
- the children are wearing appropriate clothing ie: outside temp, right size
- I lay their clothes out each evening and avoid “discussions” about the chosen outfit
- freshly washed and folded clothes are not laying on the floor, in a heap, in bedrooms
- clothes aren’t found shoved under beds or behind dressers – maybe this only happens at my house??
I also wanted to share what we have done in the kids bedrooms since they no longer have clothes in closets and dressers. In the boys room we got rid of both dressers – both dressers had seen better days anyway. We moved Jacob’s desk into the closet and moved the round table that had been in the school room into their room. Now they have a nice sized table for drawing, and lego creations can be up off the floor.
In the girls room we moved this shelf into their closet (we plan to take the closet doors off). It gives them a little extra nook of play space.
My laundry time hasn’t necessarily been shortened, laundry is still laundry. I think if there had been a way for us to incorporate the family closet into the laundry room, my laundry room is small so there isn’t, then I would have noticed some shorter laundry days. But I really believe that if you have young children, regardless of family size, the family closet is a big sanity saver. I am really glad we made this change and I think it will serve us well for many years.
