WUTW :: Holland & Cranberries ~ 11/18/2011

Around the House ::  We’ve been gearing up all week for our road trip to North Carolina.  We did lessons on Sunday because I knew by the end of the week we would all be too distracted to sit down and get much done.  The kids worked hard during the beginning of the week and by Wednesday the bulk of our work was done.

Over the weekend a dear friend shared a free app with me called Words with Friends.  I have since hired a tutor, a nanny, and a housekeeper to free me up so I have time to further my habit.  It’s just an electronic version of scrabble, but it’s serious fun.  I even got my husband into the mix, although he’s not interested in coming up with great words, he just wants to score points.  More specifically he just wants to win.  However, I’m way more competitive than he is, he actually lets the kids win while playing games – can you imagine?, so I won’t go down without a fight.

In the Kitchen ::  We’ve been reading one of my very favorite Thanksgiving books all week, Cranberry Thanksgiving.  I’m not sure why I love the book so much, I just do.  We made the Cranberry bread, a majority of my kids like cranberries, and the bread is delicious.

Learning ::  Jacob has been playing Timez Attack to brush up on his multiplication facts.

Last week we made a cute craft with friends.

My friend drew a picture of a turkey and then the kids ripped construction paper into different shapes and filled in the body and the feathers.
It was a good craft for all the different ages in our house.

Paths of Exploration ::  This week the Pilgrims are in Holland, a brief stop before they start their new lives in the New World.  Holland sounds pretty charming in the 1600’s.  Little girls walking around in their red wooden shoes knitting, ice skating through the canals, and of course the Storks on the chimneys.  We watched a few youtube videos on Windmills and then, because cheese is popular in Holland, we watched a PBS special called The Cheese Nun.  Oddly enough it’s about a nun who makes cheese!

We made Indian Corn on Wednesday evening.  I found the idea on Pinterest, as if there is anything you can’t find on Pinterest.  This may or may not have been our dinner that night.

Hope you have a very blessed Thanksgiving!  Hard to believe that as soon as Thanksgiving is over, Advent begins.

    Do you have Hanging With Friends, too? Oooh. So addictive.

    Have a great trip to NC!!!

    Fun art projects! And I have steered clear of Words with Friends. I’ve heard it’s fun and addicting, and I just don’t need one more thing like that! 😉

    Lol, that may or may not have been your dinner. It would have definitely been ours! Love the ripping paper art project. I was going to say they look more like cornucopias, but they’re fun nevertheless! =) I might have to try that idea with my kiddo and see what happens! When all the kids do the same project it is always so fun to see what the take is from each one. All the turkeys turned out great! Cranberry Thanksgiving is a favorite here too- I would have forgotten to read it this week if you did not mention it. Aren’t Youtube videos great? I love that it makes things so real for the kids.

    Have a wonderful time with your sister. I can only imagine how anxious you are to see her and her family! Happy Thanksgiving!!

    btw- I am linking the advent posts on Keeping it Simple on Sunday.

    We love using PBS specials to add on to what we are learning. We do “Sunday” school sometimes also when we know it’s going to be a busy week. Then we don’t get too far behind, we know we have a full day done already!

    Have a safe trip.
