Attachment Therapy

Just when life is moving along at a nice pace, surprise! a little bump in the road appears.  No matter how minor the bump, it's still a change in plans, my plans!.

For us, our bump in the road is the need for attachment therapy.  I guess some sort of therapy was inevitable for our family, with having six children adopted from "hard places", I'm just surprised it happens to be this particular child.

I was missing some of the more subtle signs of attachment issues.  When we finally talked to our social worker she said this is "absolutely attachment related".  We have a fabulous social worker whom we have known since before we brought our oldest son home.  She never said "duh, you should know this!". She simply said this is who you need to call and what you need to do.

We are now in the process of coordinating schedules to make a weekly standing appointment with the attachment therapist part of our new normal routine.  We are looking forward to helping our daughter, and really, our entire family.

When we met with the therapist for the first time last week, she suggested some books and resources that may be helpful.  I haven't had much time to go through all the suggestions myself, but I thought I would pass along the recommendations:

Heather Forbes Beyond Consequences
The Whole Brained Child
Parenting From the Inside Out
Attachment-Focused Parenting

Have you found any of these books particularly helpful?  Anything that I should be reading that isn't on the list?  Has attachment therapy been helpful for your family?  I'm all ears!

We used the attachment therapy materials from Nancy Thomas. Our oldest dd had severe attachment issues that were even worse because she has FASD which make attachment in normal circumstances difficult. Her behaviors were certainly not subtle and we knew we were in deep water when she was only three. She is eleven now. I have been thinking about a need to do a post about RAD parenting recently. I will let you know if I get it together. Circle your wagons of support.
Blessings,
Dawn

You likely already know about all of the issues we've had with our little one from Vietnam. We have had a really hard time finding anyone in our area (central Ohio) who can help. She's doing a lot better now after some sessions with an OT and autism therapist (her attachment issues were so bad that she ended up developing signs of autism, and while there are no good attachment therapists that can help, her psychologist is good with both attachment and autism behaviors, so she's made some significant progress.)

I've read the first book on your list. Heather Forbes is pretty good...not all of her suggestions worked for us, but it was a good place to start.

Both of our girls also have symptoms of FAS and one has RAD. I would love to read your post. So many symptoms mirror one another and then we find ourselves second guessing things. It's definitely an eye opener that you have to live to understand fully.

I wish I could offer an opinion on any of the books or other resources. I know it is tough to adjust to incorporating these bumps (big or small) in to our lives. Praying for you and your family!

It sounds like you have some pretty wonderful people working with you, Jen. I will keep you all in prayer as well. I have not read any of the books, but, they look very interesting. Do you know if attachment issues are more of a adoption related thing or do other children have these issues too? Many blessings to you all.

Beyond Consequences, logic and control, by Heather Forbes and Bryan Post are excellent and really, to us, made the most sense of any thing else we read. They both have several books out, now , and there is a great video course (Healing of the Attachment Challenged, Angry, Defiant Child) By Bryan Post that we found very helpful.
The Attachment Focused Parenting Book is also very good.

Attachment issues can happen for a variety of issues, but does tend to be more likely for an adoption situation.

Thank you Lisa!

We have been digging into the Forbes/Post resources and I would agree. We have also started watching the video series by Post, it is excellent, all adoptive parents should watch it! Thanks for your comment.
