The Life of Archbishop Fulton Sheen:
Archbishop Fulton Sheen was born in Illinois in 1895 on May 8. He was ordained a priest in 1919. He was the first American to receive a Super Doctorate in Belgium 1925 – he was a well educated man!
He became well known to the country in 1930 when he began hosting The Catholic Hour on radio. The Catholic Hour ran for 20 years. Then he hosted a television program called Life is Worth Living from 1951-1957 which won an Emmy.
Sheen is credited with being instrumental in the conversion of several famous people including automaker Henry Ford II.
His cause for Sainthood was opened in 2002 and he was declared Venerable in June 2012.
His words are timeless and worth revisiting. Here are some of my favorite quotes. Pick your favorite quote and use it for copywork in your homeschool on May 8th or memorize a favorite quote during the month of May.
Archbishop Fulton Sheen Quotes:
“If you don’t behave as you believe, you will end up believing as you behave”
“Too many people get credit for being good, when they are only being passive. They are too often praised for being broadminded when they are so broadminded they can never make up their minds about anything”
“America it is said, is suffering from intolerance – it is not. It is suffering from tolerance. Tolerance of right and wrong, truth and error, virtue and evil, Christ and chaos. Our country is not nearly so overrun with the bigoted as it is overrun with the broadminded.”
“It takes three to make love, not two: you, your spouse, and God. Without God people only succeed in bringing out the worst in one another. Lovers who have nothing else to do but love each other soon find there is nothing else. Without a central loyalty life is unfinished.” Seven Words of Jesus and Mary: Lessons from Cana and Calvary
“Very few people believe in the devil these days, which suits the devil very well. He is always helping to circulate the news of his own death. The essence of God is existence, and He defies Himself as ‘I am Who am’. The essence of the devil is the lie, and he defines himself as ‘I am who am not’. Satan has very little trouble with those who do not believe in him; they are already on his side.”
“There are not one hundred people in the United States who hate The Catholic Church, but there are millions who hate what they wrongly perceive The Catholic Church to be”
