Homeschooling During A Move? Yes You Can!

Think it’s impossible to homeschool during a move?

It’s a daunting task, but it can be done!

Relax Expectations During A Move

It’s perfectly okay to have an amended schedule for a few weeks.  We moved at the end of September and managed to get in a good six weeks of school week before we took a break for our actual move.

In August I posted our curriculum plans for the 2013-2014 school year.  However, I quickly realized that I was setting both myself and my children up for failure and frustration.  Even though I was eager to begin our new curriculum, I made the right decision to scale back our plans until we were settled in our new home.

We decided to just focus on our core work and then add in a unit study on the state of Florida.  Our temporary schedule was good.  It was enough.  The kids were still getting math, reading, religion as well as learning about our new state.

The other benefit was that I could get all of our school books and other supplies packed away before the last minute.  I kept the items that we were working with in a milk crate.

Then when we made our physical move, I put the milk crate in the car with us and off we went to Florida!  When we arrived in Florida, our books were ready to go as soon as we were.

Taking Time to Get Settled

Since we have only been in our new state for 3 weeks, we are still doing our amended schedule.  We have plans to start our full schedule at the beginning of November.  It still gives us a couple of weeks to settle in enjoy our new surroundings.

If we aren’t ready at that time though, its okay, we can push it back to the following week.  In the grand scheme of things, an extra week or two won’t make a big difference.

Happy Homeschooling!
