This Week’s Adventure:
Jacob and Sarah left on Tuesday to fly to Michigan for a week. They are visiting grandparents and friends and the snow! While they are gone we are looking forward to having Bob’s mom and sister visit us for the weekend. They are from Michigan and Minnesota, so they are ready for some Florida sunshine.
One thing I have noticed about living in Florida and having visitors is I somehow feel personally responsible for the weather. As in if it isn’t warm and sunny, I feel the need to apologize. It’s a lot of pressure Somehow I will manage.
I’m a broken record about this aspect of homeschooling, but I love that we can take a week whenever we want to do things that matter.
Exploring Florida History at Fort Foster:
Last Friday our field trip was a visit to Fort Foster. We went during a re-enactment weekend. We were able to hear stories, ask questions, and see first hand how the soldiers and the Seminoles lived during the Seminole Wars.
We walked away from the day feeling like we learned a great deal. We also had a greater appreciation for the conveniences of modern life. This is a spot we would definitely like to visit again. It also worked out well that we briefly touched on the Seminole wars in some of our readings last week with Tapestry of Grace.
The Seminole Wars are an interesting part of our history.
What we are Reading:
Jacob started reading Lincoln’s Last Days: The Shocking Assassination that Changed America Forever My husband is reading the grown-up version called Killing Lincoln: The Shocking Assassination that Changed America Forever. They should have some interesting discussions about these events. I plan to read the YA version when Jacob is finished. I really enjoy seeing all the pictures that are included in that version.
I finished reading Sharp Objects – that was an “interesting” read. It’s a book club choice. I like that aspect of being in a book club, I often read books that I wouldn’t read on my own. Next up I’m starting Divergent, then I just picked up two more books from the library, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks and Stella Bain by Anita Shreve.
We didn’t do a ton of reading this week for our regular school work since two of our students were on vacation. Next week we start learning about the Erie Canal and John James Audubon.
