Favorite Family Picture Books
Many of our favorite picture books are from Five in a Row. I give much credit to that program for cementing my love of good books for children and avoiding most twaddle. It has opened the doors for us to read some truly fantastic books. Books that have become part of our family.
Picture books are not just for young children either. There are many beautiful pictures books that teach and/or introduce important topics to discuss with our children.
We often use picture books as a spring board for topics than can be difficult to talk about. We use picture books to talk about adoption, moving, and difficult moments in history. That’s what I mean about picture books not being just for the littlest of children.
It’s fun to get into picture books, it generally means our children’s attention spans are growing and they can be engaged for longer periods of time. Notice I didn’t say sit still! Sitting still is not a requirement for being a good listener for many children. I have one that can practically perform a circus routine, yet still has awesome comprehension. I don’t know how he does it, but it works for him.
It was hard to narrow this list down to just 5 books!
Miss Rumphius – A beautiful book about kindness and beauty.
Make Way for Ducklings – Just a sweet story about family.
Clown of God – I feel like this is one of those books that your children should not leave home without reading! I can hardly get through the book without crying. A beautiful story about the love of God.
Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel – Proof that just because something is old doesn’t mean it isn’t useful!
Katie Caboose Got Loose – Bill Peet is a favorite author because I enjoy reading books that rhyme. We discovered this book when we were reading anything and everything about trains when my oldest was little.
